The fundamental concept of teaching and coaching is to not only tell a player or student what to do but to be able to communicate all these questions:

Who?
What?

If you were to look at this in the context of “defensive zone coverage” let’s look at these questions further because it’s of no use if a coach just shows the basic spots of DZ coverage…

Who is supposed to be in that spot? What am I trying to accomplish by being in that spot? When should I stand in that spot and when do I move to a different one? Where exactly should I stand and can you provide me with a landmark on the ice? Why would I stand there and not somewhere else? How exactly do you want me to stand in that spot (i.e. Feet facing up the ice, stick on the ice, etc.)?
